Gweru appoints town clerk, chamber secretary
THE Local Government Board has approved the appointments of Redcliff town clerk, Elizabeth Gwatipedza, as the new Gweru City Council boss and that of Harare provincial magistrate, Vakai Chikwekwe as chamber secretary.

Their appointments are with effect from November 17.

Gwatipedza replaces former town clerk, Daniel Matawu, who was fired in July this year on allegations of gross incompetence and negligence. Chikwekwe, who was a Harare provincial magistrate, fills in the position of chamber secretary, which was held by Gibson Chingwadza in an acting capacity since 2011.

Before moving to Harare, Chikwekwe once served as a regional magistrate in Gweru and magistrate-in-charge for Matabeleland South.

Chairperson of the commission running the affairs of Gweru, Tsungai Mhangami confirmed the appointments yesterday.

“Yes, it’s true, the two (town clerk and chamber secretary) had their appointments approved by the Local Government Board, which (appointments) are effective November 17,” he said.

The development means the local authority has filled all departments with substantive heads following the recent recruitment of substantive directors in the departments of health, engineering, housing and community services in line with Local Government minister Saviour Kasukuwere’s directive.
