Darts tourney on cards

This year’s edition of the Darts National Easter tournament will be held at Thornhill High School in Gweru, National Darts Association (NDA) president Menard Moyo has confirmed.

Moyo said they are expecting a bigger event this year and nine provinces out of the country’s 10 have since confirmed their participation.

“We are going to have Easter tournament in Gweru and it will run throughout that period,” Moyo told the Daily News yesterday.

“We are looking forward to have all teams available from all provinces. We are expecting both male and female teams to participate.

“There is a bit of incentives medals and trophies for the winners.”

Moyo, however, said their coffers were dry and appealed to the corporate world to come on board and partner NDA.

“Our challenges are on the financial side and we are looking for help. We are asking for the corporate world to chip in. Darts is not as popular as sports like soccer or cricket but we are trying our best to ensure it becomes a more recognised sport in the country,” he said.

“We are hoping it will grow faster hopefully with the help of the corporate world and other well-wishers.”

Midlands Province are the defending champions in the men’s category while Harare Province are the defending champions in the women’s category.

Kudzanai Nyemba of Mashonaland West is the defending champion in the closed single while his father David will defend his open single title he won last year at Kutama College.

In the ladies category Svodai Nyika of Harare will defend her closed single with Tracy Mutinhiri from Mash Central set to defend her title in the open single.
