Makoto, Sibanda win Gweru Grand Prix

International Master Rodwell Makoto and Castro Sibanda were tied on the first position to win the Gweru Grand prix which was held at Chaplin High school in Gweru from the 24th-25th of May.

They drew their final round to finish with 6,5 points out of 7 rounds of play.Castro Sibanda had dismissed Spencer Masango in the 6th round to be pitted against IM Makoto in the final round of the Grand Prix. Spencer Masango and Heath Darare were tied on 6 points out of 7 rounds of play.

There was another pair on 5,5 points Elisha Chimbamu and Dion Moyo. Elisha Thabo, Hamilton Mandeya and Brighton Joshua were all tied on 5 points out of 7 games of play. Makoto who is now based in Joburg South Africa came to Zimbabwe and won the tourney. He went back soon after the tourney.

Tatenda Zengeni was the best lady of the tourney followed by Colleta Wakuruwarehwa. Dylan Wizman was the best scholar scoring 5 points. The tourney was very difficult and players braced for the chilly weather in the Midlands capital.

Some students at Midlands State University also took part in this tourney. The likes of Langton Mwanza, Michael and Emmanuel Musekiwa.

Meanwhile on the 24th schools in the Harare chess league were battling it out at Dominican Convent. Mabvuku played against Mazowe and dismissed them 4-2 before thrashing Mufakose 2, 5-1 in the double

round fixtures. Prince Edward dismissed St.Ignatius the defending champions 4,5-1,5. St. Georges drew against Mufakose 2 in another fixture.Goromonzi won 4-2 against Mufakose 2. The above teams are

battling it out in division one of the Harare schools chess Association which now boasts of 6 divisions.

In a match played at Chipindura Tapiwa Chikwavaire's school Zengeza 2 dismissed the hosts 3,5-2,5.The team which tasted defeat is doing well under the guidance of Mr Midzi.

Mabvuku will play host to Prince Edward this coming Friday,Goromonzi will host Churchill, St.Ignatius host Mazowe in division one fixtures. In division 2 Convent host St. Johns Emerald B team, PE B host Ellis Robbins, St. Johns Emerald A host Allan Wilson and lastly Lord Marlven host Visitation High school.
